Maine lobster fishery achieves ‘sustainable’ status

BOSTON, Mass. — The Marine Stewardship Council has certified the Maine lobster fishery as sustainable, Gov. LePage announced at the Boston Seafood Show on Sunday.

“This not only helps other Maine fisheries, it helps the state. We are the lobster for the world,” said LePage, who gave credit to Maine Department of Marine Resources Commissioner Patrick Keliher. Continue reading

Canadian man plans Rockland lobster processing plant in old newspaper building

ROCKLAND, Maine — A New Brunswick man is a few weeks away from opening a lobster storage and processing plant in Rockland’s Industrial Park that will add jobs and provide another place for lobstermen to sell their catches.

Frank Benoit said he chose Rockland because he has an existing business relationship with J & J Lobster that has been selling him lobsters for the past two years. Continue reading

The Jetport unveils its impressive $75 million passenger terminal at a VIP soiree on Thursday.

Early this morning, the first flights took off from the new $75 million passenger terminal at the Portland International Jetport. But on Thursday night, a group of more than 500 business and political leaders got the first peek at the lofty new space.

During the VIP Grand Opening Celebration, guests enjoyed hors d’oeuvres and cocktails that called attention to the more than a dozen major cities served by daily nonstop flights from the Jetport. Continue reading

Bean’s lobster business on roll

ST. GEORGE — For years, Linda Bean had admired the picturesque wharfs and waterfront businesses in the villages on the St. George peninsula on Penobscot Bay.

She even went so far as to offer her name and phone number at one point to David Albano, owner of the Bay Lobster Co. and wharf in Port Clyde, in case he ever decided to sell. Then she forgot all about it, until Albano, who had stuck her number in a drawer nine years earlier, called her to ask if she was still interested. Continue reading

New Law Nets Its First Big Catch As Walmart, Linda Bean Ink Deal

ELLSWORTH — Strange as it may seem, the folks in Augusta may have got one right.

Last March, the Legislature passed a new law that allowed Maine lobster processors to expand the kinds of products they could create and market. The law went into effect on July 1, and last week in Rockland Linda Bean’s Maine Lobster announced a major deal to sell cooked, frozen lobster claws with pre-scored shells (sawn part way through to make them easy to snap open and eat) to retail giant Walmart.
